The table illustrates the percentage distribution of water usage for domestic, agricultural, and industrial purposes across six different countries in the year 2005.

Overall, it is evident that developed nations such as the UK, Canada, Australia, and China allocated the majority of their water resources to industrial uses, while in contrast, India and Japan prioritized domestic consumption. Agricultural usage was minimal in most countries except Japan.

In detail, the UK had the highest proportion of water used for industrial purposes at 90%, with domestic and agricultural uses equally low at 5% each. Similarly, China and Australia allocated 87% and 82% of their water to industrial use respectively, with relatively small percentages for agriculture and domestic purposes.

Canada also showed a significant industrial water use at 62%, but it had a more balanced distribution between domestic and agricultural uses, both standing at 19%. Conversely, India had a strikingly different pattern, dedicating 65% of its water to domestic use and only 2% to agriculture. Japan followed a similar trend, using 63% of its water domestically, 32% for agriculture, and only 5% for industrial activities.

To sum up, industrial use dominated water consumption in most countries except India and Japan, where domestic use was the primary focus. Agricultural usage remained the least significant across the majority of the countries analyzed.

Estimated Band Score: 8.0

Breakdown and Justification:

1. Task Achievement: Band 8

  • The main features are clearly presented, comparisons are made, and all relevant data is covered.

  • There is a clear summary and an appropriate overview of the trends.

  • Minor details like Japan's relatively high agricultural use are accurately noted.

2. Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8

  • The structure is logical and paragraphs are well-organized.

  • Cohesive devices (e.g., similarly, in contrast, conversely) are used effectively without being overused.

  • The progression of ideas is clear and natural.

3. Lexical Resource: Band 8

  • A wide range of vocabulary is used appropriately (e.g., allocated, prioritized, distribution, strikingly).

  • Some higher-level vocabulary is evident, though a few synonyms could enhance variation further (e.g., avoid repeating "used" often).

4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8

  • A good mix of sentence types (complex, compound) and accurate grammar.

  • Occasional minor improvements could include more variety in sentence structures and passive constructions for polish.

🛠️ Suggestions to Reach Band 9:

  • Add more precise data groupings: Mention that industrial use dominates in 4 of 6 countries clearly in one sentence.

  • Use more advanced structures: For example, use passive forms like “Water was predominantly allocated to industrial sectors in…”

  • Enhance lexical diversity: Replace “used” with “consumed,” “utilized,” or “allocated” when repeating.

  • Polish summary further: The conclusion could briefly highlight the contrast between developed and developing countries to show deeper insight.
